The Governor says protecting education from state budget cuts remains a top priority.

Governor Jim Doyle says Wisconsin schools are an essential part of any plans to keep the state moving towards economic recovery. However, Doyle says even schools could face cuts in his upcoming state budget.

The Governor says schools are going to have do more with less in the upcoming biennium, however he wants to avoid any cuts that would do long term harm to the quality of education.

Still, Doyle hopes to stick to the state's commitment to fund two-thirds of the educational system. He says schools should be satisfied if the same level of funding can be maintained in the budget.

Wisconsin is currently facing a $5.4 billion deficit for the upcoming two year budget period. Doyle's state budget is due to be released in about a month.
