A proposal at the Capitol would increase Wisconsin's beer tax for the first time since 1969. It's authored by State Representative Terese Berceau (D-Madison) and State Senator Fred Risser (D-Madison). Berceau says they're introducing the bill because it will help address the costs and problems associated with the heavy use of alcohol in the state.

Berceau says Wisconsin has the third lowest tax rate in the nation on beer. She says the money would be directed towards prevention and treatment efforts. The plan would increase the tax on a six-pack by about 15 cents and could raise up to $20 million a year in new state revenue.

Legislative leaders on the both sides of the aisle have already voiced opposition to the proposal. One lawmaker says the plan is "dead on arrival."
