Governor Scott Walker’s reading task force has met for the first time. The Governor unveiled his “Read to Lead” initiative during his state budget address, with a goal of increasing proficiency among Wisconsin’s third graders. State Representative Jason Fields is a Milwaukee Democrat and a member of the task force. “The most confusing, perplexing part of whenever we discuss education is, how is it that we all sit in these rooms, but year after year nothing is done? It never changes,” said Fields. Members of the task force, which includes educators as well as legislators, suggested looking at what other states have down to improve reading proficiency in the early grades. Walker has suggested more testing and greater parental involvement, but he won’t mandate a course for the task force to follow.
