Spending on public schools during the recession in Wisconsin outpaced that in other states, according to a report by the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance. President Todd Berry says spending here was up about 2.5 percent in 2010, the period the report examined.

In 2010, Berry says the state an average of about $11,000 per student, which was about seven percent higher than the national average.

Berry notes that, before the recession, national spending had been growing faster than in Wisconsin. He says that was largely due to revenue limits, which put some restriction on how fast spending across the state could grow.

Overall, Wisconsin ranked 17th highest nationally in per-student spending.
