The Government Accountability Board orders a recount in the 21st state Senate district. Monday afternoon’s order asks the Racine County Board of Canvassers to start that recount Wednesday morning.
Incumbent Republican Senator Van Wanggaard had requested the recount after last week’s official canvass showed him trailing Democratic challenger John Lehman by 834 votes. A total of almost 72 thousand votes were cast.
Racine County will have until July 2nd to finish the vote recount. GAB staff attorney Mike Haas says, “The recount has to be completed within 13 calendar days of the date that we issue the order. After that time there’s an appeal period of five business days, if a candidate wants to appeal to circuit court.”
The victorious party in this race wins majority control of the state Senate.
