A Republican state senator predicts that we can expect "selective tax increases" as Governor Doyle and majority Democrats in the Legislature develop plans to tackle Wisconsin's big budget deficit.

Senator Alan Lasee (R-De Pere) think they'll be included in budget repair plans, aimed at closing a $5.4 billion budget hole. Lasee thinks the stage is set for a tax increase, despite claims one won't be needed. He says the songs of "doom and gloom" from Democrats will likely lead to one anyway.

Governor Doyle is expected to announce some budget plans in his State of the State address next week, and has said he hopes to avoid general tax hikes.
