Dignitaries gather for the grand opening of the East Tower of the Wisconsin Institutes for Medical Research.

The seven-floor East Tower is the first of three interdisciplinary research towers that will grow to also house cardiovascular, neuroscience and regenerative medicine research in Madison.

Bob Golden is Dean of the School of Medicine and Public Health. "And when they are finished, the work done at in the Wisconsin Institutes for Medical Research will touch on every aspect of human disease."

Governor Jim Doyle says discoveries will be coming out of the University of Wisconsin for decades to come. He says it doesn't get much better than this … improving the lives of people throughout the world.

"In this building and in the buildings to come and in the new Institutes for Discovery, discoveries I'm sure will be made that are far beyond my humble ability to understand even what these people are looking at."

New UW Madison Chancellor Biddy Martin is excited about the advances in biomedical sciences right around the corner.

"I believe I've come at just the right time to have a seat on the sidelines to watch what occurs over the next decade."

The East Tower is adjacent to UW Hospital and Clinics and the American Family Children's Hospital.
