A state lawmaker wants to change how the Electoral College works in Wisconsin.

Winning the popular vote in Wisconsin almost guarantees a presidential candidate all ten of the state's Electoral Votes. State Representative Gary Tauchen (R-Bonduel) thinks it should be more fairly divided.

Tauchen plans to introduce a bill that would divide up Wisconsin's votes by Congressional District. Winning a district would earn a candidate a vote, with the remaining two going to the winner of the popular vote.

Tauchen says political opinions vary across Wisconsin, and Presidential voting should reflect that. He points to the closeness of the last two presidential races in Wisconsin as an example, where the gap between John Kerry and President Bush was just over 11,000 votes.

Tauchen's proposal is similar to the system used by Maine and Nebraska to determine who wins their Electoral Votes.
