Wisconsin's new Revenue Secretary on Friday reassured lawmakers that his agency is working to assure security. Secretary Roger M. Ervin told members of an Assembly Committee that thousands of taxpayers, whose Social Security numbers were mailed on tax forms , will be receiving letters soon. Those taxpayers will be eligible for free credit monitoring for one year. State Representative Timothy Cullen questioned Ervin about Ripon Community Printers, which mailed some 170,000 tax forms with Social Security numbers printed on them. Ervin said the contract will expire at the end of the year, but this printer will remain eligible to bid on state contracts. Ervin also took the opportunity to make a pitch for electronic filing of tax returns, calling it the taxpayers' best defense against identity theft.
