The UW-Oshkosh student charged in federal court this week with possessing ricin is now suspended from the school.

University Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Petra Roter says two professors did a great job of following school procedures when they contacted police after having conversations with Smith, in which he discussed making the deadly toxin. That information led to a raid of Smith’s off-campus home on Halloween. FBI officials say a white powder that was taken from the home tested positive for ricin.

New UW-Oshkosh Chancellor Andrew Leavitt says he’s not concerned about the level of safety, on and around campus, after the ricin scare and a series of robberies and assaults near campus.

Roter says Smith could face future punishment from the school, once his case is decided in federal court.
