Ripon's Little White Schoolhouse

Ripon’s Little White Schoolhouse

Today marks the 160th anniversary of the birth of the Republican Party, and it’s a special day in Ripon.

The party’s roots are traced back to Ripon’s Little White Schoolhouse, where the first meeting of individuals who helped found the Republican party was held. Jason Mansmith of the Ripon Area Chamber of Commerce says 53 people got together at the schoolhouse on March 20, 1854 to organize a new party. He says the anti-slavery movement was at the heart of it.

Mansmith says it’s an important stop that people should see, no matter what their party affiliation is. Ripon is planning a number of events throughout the year to celebrate the anniversary.
