Republican leaders are putting controversial measures on the fast track at the state Capitol, such as Voter ID and concealed carry, leading to speculation that they may be trying to get their agenda through before possible recall elections in July.
UW-Green Bay political scientist Michael Kraft says that make sense, because the bills normally would not be under any other time constraint. He says there are few reasons to pass those bills quickly, especially with such strong objections being raised against them.
Kraft says there are good reasons for the GOP to be concerned, with recent polls showing many people are angry with Republicans for voting in favor of Governor Walker’s collective bargaining bill.
As many as six Republican senators could face recall elections this summer, while only three Democrats have had petitions turned in against them. Democrats would take control of the Senate if they’re able to pick up three seats.
