Visits by the vice-presidential candidates are turning the campaign spotlight on Wisconsin this week. Republican vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan is in the state on Wednesday, and Joe Biden will be here Thursday. “There are two ways to look at campaigns, says political scientist Charles Franklin. “One is through the lens of polling, and that shows we’re a single-digit race. But the other way to do it is to look at what the campaigns do, rather than what they say.”

And, the Romney/Ryan campaign recently made a major ad but in Wisconsin. Franklin says more ads – and perhaps visits by the top of tickets – will show the state is play. “That says that the campaigns now see us as a battleground state,” he said.

Ryan is in DePere for a town hall event, while Biden is expected to talk about what he and President Obama will do to confront the national debt, during a Thursday stop at UW Eau Claire.
