Congressman Paul Ryan has a plan to deal with the nation's entitlement crisis. Ryan's ambitious “Roadmap for America's Future” aims to fix what the nation's “explosion of entitlement spending,” addressing universal health care, Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, and restructuring the tax code. “This plan maintains the American legacy of leaving the next generation better of,” says Ryan. “I recognize that this is a very ambitious proposal. Not everyone's going to agree with every aspect . . . and that's fine. These problems are not Democratic problems, and they're not Republican problems, and neither are the solutions.”
Ryan says, if nothing else, he expects his plan will kick start action in Congress — and he insists it has nothing to do with rumors he'd be a good candidate for vice-president. “This, to me, is a platform for action,” says Ryan, saying ambitions for highest office were “farthest from my mind.” Ryan says staying with the status quo will lead to collapse of the nation's health and retirement systems, crushing debt for future generations, and an economy unable to compete with the rest of the world.
