Wisconsin’s “Safe Haven Law” allows for a newborn of 7-days or less to be taken to a fire station, hospital or emergency medical facility without fear of penalty. That law came into play in the City of Racine early Friday morning.

Fire Chief Steve Hansen says before dawn, an infant male, about 15-hours old, with the umbilical cord still attached, was dropped off at one of their stations.

The individual doing so did not provide any identification, which is not required. The baby was taken by paramedics to a local hospital.

Chief Hansen says it’s another reminder about the Safe Haven Law, and the fact there are options available for unwanted babies. All fire stations in the greater Racine area participate, with Hansen saying “we’re here to care for those who are unable to care for themselves, or their babies.”
