A veteran Sauk Prairie police officer is accused of pilfering pain meds. Matthew Alt has been with the Sauk Prairie Police Department for 17 years. A criminal complaint says he went to the police department on his days off, and empited a drop box, which is for citizens to dispose of unwanted or expired prescription pills. A search of Alt’s home turned up nearly 500 pills, all some form of the opiate painkiller, hydrocodone.

The 38-year-old officer is on paid leave pending an internal investigation. He faces drug possession and misconduct charges. Alt was charged in Sauk County court Thursday.
