She traded in Wisconsin's snowy winters and seasonal severe weather to move to California. Now, North Fond du Lac native Laura Novack is one of the thousands waiting to see if she'll have to leave her home behind in north San Diego County as wildfires continue raging in Southern California. She says the fires have taken place all around where she lives in San Marcos and she admits it's scary. "We were really nervous when we got up on Monday morning," says Novack. "We packed our bags. We were expecting a phone call telling us to evacuate." That phone call didn't come. Still, Novack, her husband Jay and their infant daughter Claire are hoping for the best, but are prepared for the worst. "If these (fires) all merge, there's going to be no other place to go but straight to the beach." Novack says she was reminded of growing up in Wisconsin the other day when she peered outside and it looked like it was snowing. The "snow" was actually white ash from the wildfires.
