State consumer protection officials are receiving reports about unsolicited calls coming to Wisconsin residents.

The pre-recorded robocalls promise a free home security system, in exchange for putting a sign in your yard. Jerad Albrecht with the state Division of Consumer Protection says they do not appear to be coming from a legitimate company and are most likely fraudulent. He says the unsolicited sales calls are illegal and anyone receiving them should just hang up.

The calls offer the option of pressing a button to talk to an operator or to be removed from their contact list. Albrecht says both options are a bad choice, since either action will tell the scammers that a number is active. He says that could lead to more scam calls in the future.

Albrecht says the calls are likely coming from overseas, which means there’s little the state can do to stop them.
