State Senator Randy Hopper is responding to blogs, personal attacks and a complaint filed with the state Attorney General’s office which question whether he’s indeed living in the 18th District that he represents.
“I live in the district that I serve. I’ve never lived anywhere else in the 18 years, or 19 years I’ve been in the district,” Hopper tells KFIZ, a radio station he owns.
The Fond du Lac lawmaker says he took a local reporter from another news organization to his residence, so they could see where he lives. Hopper adds he does not live in his former home but that is “a private matter.”
Hopper and his wife are in the midst of a divorce.
Dawn Meyer filed the complaint with the Attorney General’s office. Hopper Campaign spokesman Jeff Harvey says the residency issue is part of a smear campaign by those pushing for a recall.
Hopper is one of eight Republican Senators targeted for supporting the budget repair bill.
Eight Democrats are also targeted for fleeing to Illinois for three weeks in an unsuccessful attempt to block a vote on the measure.
