A historic choice at the state Capitol. State Senator Mary Lazich of New Berlin becomes the first woman to serve as President of the Wisconsin Senate. Lazich suceeds Senator Mike Ellis, who did not seek re-election after decades of legislative service. Lazich, who as President will preside over Senate floor sessions, beat Senator Jerry Petrowski for the post in balloting by Senate Republicans on Thursday.

Republican Senators unanimously re-elected Senator Scott Fitzgerald of Juneau as their majority leader. Fitzgerald has served as Senate GOP leader since 2007 through several changes in which party controls the chamber.
