The House Judiciary Committee, chaired by Wisconsin Republican Jim Sensenbrenner, held a field hearing in Dubuque Friday.
Sensenbrenner, who's advocated a tougher immigration policy than either the Bush administration or Republicans in the U.S. Senate, has held five field hearings on the issue. He said today that the Senate immigration bill, which includes an amnesty provision, repeats the mistakes of the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act.
The Menomonee Falls Republican said immigration reform remains “a tense and touchy issue,” which ultimately will need to be dealt with by enforcing the rule of law in a compassionate manner.
