The state is making progress in tracking down sex offenders who have failed to register.

Wisconsin first launched its Sex Offender Apprehension and Felony Enforcement, or SAFE Initiative in 2005 to track down individuals who have not complied with the state's registry laws. Since then, Governor Jim Doyle says over 3,000 people have been located and brought into compliance.

Doyle says the state has been able track down nearly 80-percent of the state's most wanted sex offenders since the initiative was launched. There are currently 22 of those high priority offenders still considered at large by the state Department of Corrections.

The Governor says Wisconsin currently leads the nation in the number of sex offenders who add their names and addresses to the registry, with a 90-percent compliance rate.
