The Sheboygan City Council is calling for Mayor Bob Ryan’s resignation or removal following his latest drinking episode. Aldermen met Wednesday night as a Committee of the Whole in a nearly two-and-a-half hour closed session, after which Council President Eric Rindfleisch issued a statement. “The council is extremely disappointed in the mayor’s actions. His actions once again brought embarrassment to the city,” said Rindfleisch. He said the council will review its options, from censure to removal, if a formal complaint is filed against Ryan.

Ryan admitted to a weekend of drinking in Elkhart Lake, in which it was reported he passed out at one point and got into a shoving match with a patron. He called it a minor setback in his ongoing treatment program, but that’s not how the council viewed it. “We recommend a resolution be drafted, asking the mayor resign, in order to focus on his addiction and his family, and to allow the city to move forward” said Rindfleisch. The resolution will be brought before the council for formal action when it meets on Monday. Ryan was not at Wednesday’s meeting and did not return a phone call seeking his reaction.
