It’s a smaller harvest this fall for apple growers in Wisconsin. The hot and dry summer gets blamed for most of the woes of farmers growing corn and soy beans. However, this problem is being blamed on cold weather from earlier in the growing season.

Deputy state Agriculture Secretary Jeff Lyon says an early spring had apple trees starting to bloom. Then, a late cold snap hit many trees hard and damaged crops.

Lyon says it’s a problem for apple growers throughout Wisconsin. Statewide production is expected to only be at about 20 million pounds, which is a 60 percent drop from last year.
