It sounds like hunters in Wisconsin had some success during the first weekend of the gun deer season. A number of registration stations reported brisk activity, especially during the opening day on Saturday.

Richard Dickman, who runs a registration station at Dick’s Quality Meats in the Southern Wisconsin community of Blue Mounds, says hunters brought in 300 deer as of Sunday night. That’s up 50 percent from a year ago.

“We didn’t get hardly any does in here at all,” says Dickman. “They’re all bucks and they’re all nice big bucks.” Among the deer dropped off, a 250 pound, 14-pointer.

We won’t know for certain how successful hunters have been until the DNR issues preliminary numbers which could come out this afternoon.

Meanwhile, two hunting-related deaths are being investigated in north central Wisconsin. Marathon County sheriff’s deputies said 51-year-old Shawn Lemanski of Green Bay died after falling from a tree stand late Saturday afternoon. Steven Jackson, 51, of Antigo was found unresponsive Saturday evening near Gleason in Lincoln County. Sheriff’s deputies say foul play is not suspected.

The season runs through this coming Sunday.
