Spring weather could bring the possibility of flooding to many parts of Wisconsin.

With record snow falls from this winter starting to melt, many rivers and streams are already running high. Lori Getter with Wisconsin Emergency Management says that could increase the possibility of flooding this spring, especially if heavy rains or additional snow fall in the coming weeks. The extra moisture could raise water levels even more, resulting in floods.

Getter says several parts of southern Wisconsin are already facing possible floods. The agency is currently watching about six rivers that are running high. She says conditions are not expected to improve any time soon. Snow melting in the north could make the problem worse as the water makes its way down through the state.

Emergency Management has been working with counties to make sandbags available for flood-prone areas. Some counties are already making them available for residents who are at risk.

Getter says homeowners should also prepare by reviewing their homeowners' insurance. Flood insurance usually takes 30 days to go into effect after it's purchased. Getter says many residents don't realize until after a disaster that they don't have the insurance coverage needed to rebuild.
