If you see a report that says Wisconsin's corn production was down in 2006. Don't worry about it.

The National Ag Statistics Service says the state's corn production was down 7 per cent last year. Those federal numbers only consider what's harvested for grain according to Bob Olson with the Wisconsin Corn Growers Association.

Olson says, in this state, corn is harvested first for dairy cow silage and then for grain. Since stalks didn't grow as high this year more acres had to go to the silos leaving fewer acres for grain.

Olson says the yield on those acres was strong, there were just fewer of them this year. Olson says while 2005 set a record at 429-million bushels, the 2006 crop was still pretty good, ranking as the second highest on record.
