Wisconsin veterans will soon be able to use their driver’s licenses or a state ID to show they are eligible for certain benefits.
The state Departments of Veterans Affairs and Transportation announced Monday that former service personnel will be able to have an identifier added to those cards that indicates they are a veteran. Agency officials say it will make it easier for those veterans to obtain an array of programs and services, even restaurant discounts offered to vets.
Veterans will need to verify their status before obtaining the identifier, which they can do starting December second. About 30,000 Wisconsin veterans will automatically be eligible, because they have applied for certain state and federal benefits.
Overall, 370,000 Wisconsin veterans can get the identifiers by verifying their status. They can do that by calling 1-800-947-8387, or 1-800-WIS-VETS.
