The state has released a list of properties it may wish to sell or lease in the future. The state Department of Administration identifying buildings and properties which could potentially be sold or leased in the next two years.
State Representative Gordon Hintz serves on the state Building Commission. “We’re going to want to hear on a case-by-case basis whether it’s a benefit to the state, and not just in financial terms, but what the future use (of properies) is going to be,” said Hintz, an Oshkosh Democrat.
The list includes all 32 state-owned heating and cooling plants, including the Charter Street plant on the UW campus in Madison. DOA Secretary Mike Huebsch emphasizing that there are no plan to sell or lease any of the buildings at this time, and any such action would need approval by the building commission and the legislature’s joint finance committee.
“The concern from a lot of legislators and other members is just that we’ve wracked up a record level of debt, and we don’t want the fact that we’re trying to get an easy one-time source of money to mean that we’re going to try to sell state assets with little control to the future,” said Hintz.
