The State Elections Board has reached a settlement with the firm that developed a statewide voter registration system.

The agreement with Accenture ends months of debate over needed fixes to the system. State Elections Board spokesman Kyle Richmond says the deal also helps avoid a lawsuit.

As part of the deal, Accenture will have to return $4 million to the state and give up its claim on another $2 million in payments. The firm will also have to help the state make changes to the system by supplying workers. Accenture will also hand over the source code to the state as part of the deal.

Over $23 million in federal funding has already been spent on the system; however state audits have shown it still doesn't work the way it's supposed to. Richmond says they're hoping to change that in the coming weeks, to make sure they are federally compliant with the 'Help America Vote Act.”
