The WIAA state boys and girls basketball tournaments took another step

Resch Center

towards relocating to Green Bay.  Madison has hosted the boys tournament 91 of the last 92 years, and has been the host of the girls tournament since its inception in 1976.

The WIAA Board of Control approved executive director Dave Anderson’s recommendation to accept a bid by Ashwaubenon-based PMI Entertainment to host the boys and girls tournaments at the Resch Center, possibly as early as next year.

If the University of Wisconsin can’t accommodate the basketball tournaments in accordance with the terms of the existing agreements, then the WIAA will enter into a five-year agreement to move its tournaments to the Resch Center.

The issue is the UW’s inability to guarantee use of the Kohl Center in Madison for state tournaments.  The weekends for the 2013 basketball tournaments at the Kohl Center have been reserved for the Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs.

If there’s no change, the basketball tournaments would either move to another location in Madison or to Green Bay if the WIAA can get out of the final year of the contract that expires in 2013.

It’s a waiting game now for PMI Entertainment.  They’re ready next year or the year after.  It’ll depend on the WIAA’s ability to get out of its deal in Madison.
