State Transportation officials say police want people to enjoy their St. Patrick’s Day. However, Major Dan Lonsdorf says those planning to celebrate by drinking should think in advance about how they will be getting home tonight.

Lonsdorf says all holiday plans should include setting a designated driver or taking a cab home, instead of getting behind the wheel after having a few drinks while out celebrating.

St. Patrick’s Day is often associated with being a drinking holiday, and Lonsdorf says it does put a heavy focus on that kind of activity for one night. He says police will be out in force across the state tonight looking for people who have had too much to drink.

Drivers are also being reminded about tougher OWI laws that took effect last year, which increased penalties for offenders.
