I'm not one to use a sports blog to talk about non-sports issues, but I'm sick to my stomach at the continued lack of regard for human life when it comes to drinking and driving.

I live in a Green Bay suburb and I'm appalled to learn that a man left a bar, drove home drunk and on the way hit two people, one of which was still stuck in his windshield where Green Bay police found him several hours later.

Wisconsin has some of the weakest laws on the books with regards to punishing drunk drivers.  Oh, this guy will get the book thrown at him, because he actually killed somebody.  But how about preventing deaths by being proactive.

Far to often, I read about drunk drivers that not only repeat the offense once, but some 8, 9 and even 10 times.  Clearly judges and lawmakers are not taking this issue serious enough if an individual can get in a car, driving drunk that many times.

I've heard people argue that there's no funding available for rehabilitation for offenders.  What about the victims?  I don't care how much a person drinks.  You either have a high regard for the lives of others or you don't.  You can drink and not drive.  If you drive drunk, you not only have no regard for your own life, but also the life of others.  It's that simple.  And because of that, the lives of the innocent need to be protected.

I don't know where you draw the line, but drunk driving must stop.  Repeat offenders need to put in jail and society has to throw away the key.
