Henrik Stenson finished off the best stretch of his career Sunday with the biggest
payoff in golf.
Stenson closed with a 2-under par 68 to win the Tour Championship by three shots over 20-year old Jordan Spieth and Steve Stricker. The 37-year-old Stenson won the FedEx Cup and its $10-million bonus. He also earns $1.44 million for winning the Tour Championship.
Spieth finished with a 64 and Stricker a 65.
Tiger Woods went into the tournament as the No. 1 seed, but rounds of 73 and 71 during the first two days never allowed him to get close to Stenson. Woods shot a final round 67 to tie for 22nd, his worst finish ever at East Lake. He wound up placing second in the FedEx Cup, earning a $3-million bonus.
Stricker had birdie opportunities on the last two holes but missed. Had Stricker made one of them, he would have earned an extra $1-million. Instead of finishing second in the FedEx Cup, Stricker had to settle for third and the $2 million bonus.
