Madison’s Steve Stricker has been named the 2012 Payne Stewart Award winner. The 45-year-old Stricker received the award in

Atlanta on Tuesday night.
The Payne Stewart Award is named after the golfer who died in a 1999 plane crash. It’s given to the player who shares Stewart’s “respect for the traditions of the game, his commitment to uphold the game’s heritage of charitable support and the professional and meticulous presentation of himself and the sport through his dress and conduct.”
In addition to a sculpture, Stricker receives a $100,000 grant to designate to a charity or charities of his choice.
Stricker will play in the Tour Championship in two days. He’s one of three players who advanced to the Tour Championship in each of the first six years of the FedEx Cup competition. Hunter Mahan and Phil Mickelson are the others.
