Since going up about a month ago, the state’s new online registry for organ, tissue, and eye donors has proven quite popular. Kathy Schultz with Donate Life Wisconsin, which helps operate the registry, says over 10,000 people have already signed up.
Schultz says they anticipated a strong response, based on a long history of Wisconsinites signing up to be organ donors. Still, she says it’s great to see the list growing so quickly already.
The online registry is now the official record for donors in the state. That means, even if you have an orange dot on your drivers license, you will need to go to the website to make it official. Schultz says the orange dot is still a good indicator of your intentions, but the online registry provides a clear record of your wishes to medical personnel across the state.
Schultz says the continued need for people to register as organ and tissue donors is high, with over 1,500 people in Wisconsin currently waiting for an transplant.
