Appleton school district officials have reversed a previous decision, and will reinstate a battle scene reenactment during an annual 5th grade Civil War event.

The 20 minute scene was removed after parents complained that it violated the school's violence policy. District superintendent Lee Allinger says the issue was revisited after a number of parents, students, and community members came out strongly in support of the battle reenactment.

Allinger says there are strong opinions on both sides of the issue. However, the district opted to go ahead with the reenactment, which has been done for the past decade.

In the future, he says they plan to convene a panel each year that will determine if the activity is appropriate.

Parents who don't want their children to participate in the battle scene can opt out. Allinger says elementary school principals will try to find alternate activities for those students.
