Heading home from Denver

August 29, 2008 By WRN Contributor

Now that Wisconsin Democrats have wrapped up their National Convention, the focus shifts to winning the state for Presidential nominee Barack Obama.

Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Joe Wineke says the convention is all about kicking off election season. Now, he says they're heading home to work hard until November. The Party has already opened several campaign offices around the state, which are aimed at reaching out to voters.

Wineke says young voters will be a major focus of their efforts in Wisconsin, which he says are crucial to an Obama victory. He says Obama has found many supporters on college campuses, an area where voter turnout has often been a problem.

Wineke also expects Wisconsin to again be a battleground state in the Presidential race. He says Obama and running mate Joe Biden will likely be in Wisconsin several times before November.

Clinton backers leave happy

August 29, 2008 By WRN Contributor

Wisconsin delegates were "wowed" as their national convention wrapped up in Denver Thursday night. Former governor and Clinton delegate Marty Schreiber called Obama's accepetance speech "spectacular," and says the party is united, despite what he charecterizes as media attempts to play up a Clinton-Obama rift.

Another former Clinton delegate, Dane County executive Kathleen Falk, calls Obama's speech "oratory and beyond," which gave his audience the specfics many have been waiting for. "He was very specific in the vision he laid out, and I think that's what American was waiting for." Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin says she was pleased to hear Obama take on John McCain.

Kind pushes for primary reform

August 28, 2008 By WRN Contributor

Even thought the Democratic nomination for President was settled peacefully, a Wisconsin Congressman is continuing his call for reforms in the process.

Congressman Ron Kind (D-WI) says the heated primary battle between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton exposed major flaws with the selection process, primarily in the use of super delegates. Those are at large delegate slots in each state that are not bound to any candidate. Kind says their continued use is anti-Democratic because it denies some voters a voice regarding who will be the Party's nominee.

Kind also has concerns about the wide-variety of ways delegates are selected, such as caucuses. He says the party should consider an open primary process, similar to Wisconsin's which allows everyone to participate, not just the Party faithful.

The Democratic Party has formed a rules committee to examine possible changes. However, Kind doesn't expect the issues to be resolved right away with the National Convention still underway. However, he will continue pushing for change before the next presidential election rolls around.

Biden ready to be Vice President

August 28, 2008 By WRN Contributor

Joe Biden Wisconsin Democrats are rallying behind Vice Presidential nominee Joe Biden.

The U.S. Senator from Delaware delivered his acceptance speech Wednesday night in Denver, and was greeted warmly by members of the Democratic Party. Wausau-area delegate Christine Bremer Muggli says Biden was fabulous and really wrapped up the first few days of the convention. She says Biden's speech helped to vitalize delegates and show them why Republican John McCain can't be allowed to win in November.

State Senator Pat Kreitlow (D-Chippewa Falls) says Biden's speech was exactly what delegates were looking for. He says it helped introduce Biden to the nation and show why he was the right choice for Barack Obama's running mate.

Biden was briefly joined on stage by the Democratic Presidential nominee. State Party chairman Joe Wineke says that was welcome surprise, but added a perfect touch to the evening. Wineke says Biden showed he's ready to be the Vice President of the United States.

An emotional finish for Hillary supporters

August 27, 2008 By WRN Contributor

A bittersweet end to the campaign for Wisconsin Hillary Clinton supporters.

Of 32 pledged Wisconsin delegates for Hillary Clinton, 21 cast their vote for her nomination on the Democratic National Convention floor. Madison delegate Heather Colburn says she was one of them, and did so because of her strong support for Clinton. However, she says she'll be ready to fight just as hard for Democratic nominee Barack Obama in November.

Colburn says it was an emotional moment when Hillary cleared the way for Obama's nomination to lead the Democratic ticket. She says many of Hillary's supporters could be soon crying on the convention floor, including her.

Clinton met one last time with her supporters just hours before Wednesday's roll call. Colburn says it was a great way to end a hard fought campaign with a personal "thank you" from the Senator from New York.

Delegates casting their votes

August 27, 2008 By WRN Contributor

Wisconsin delegates at the Democratic National Convention are casting their votes today for who will be the party's presidential nominee.

Voting goes on all through today, with the official results being announced later this evening. Wisconsin super delegate Jason Rae says it's still unknown though how the convention will handle Senator Hillary Clinton's remaining support. Clinton is set to meet with her delegates this afternoon, where she could ask them to vote for Obama.

Rae says the normal roll call could be done, or Clinton may cut off the vote to have Barack Obama officially named as the nominee. Rae says Clinton could also decide to release her delegates, so they can openly support Obama and give the party a unified ballot.

Rae admits it's somewhat of a mystery at this point and many delegates are even unsure about what will happen. He says it's a new situation for many delegates because of how long the primary race went on and the fact that both Obama and Clinton have such devoted supporters.

Lawton: Clinton sent a clear message

August 27, 2008 By WRN Contributor

Barbara Lawton at DNC One of Hillary Clinton's leading supporters in Wisconsin says Tuesday night's speech in Denver exceeded all expectations.

Senator Clinton told her supporters that this election isn't about her, it's about Democrats winning back the White House. She urged all Democrats to support Barack Obama in the upcoming presidential election. Wisconsin Lt. Governor Barbara Lawton says the message was as clear as can be and was perfectly stated.

Lawton says Clinton was gracious in showing her support for Barack Obama. She imagines it was difficult for Clinton to step aside, after coming so close to winning the nomination…but she didn't show it. Lawton described Clinton's speech as strong, joyous, and beautifully done.

Will it be enough to win over her supporters who are hesitant to back Obama? Lawton thinks Clinton made it perfectly clear that Obama is worthy of their support.

Kind: Obama lead should be bigger

August 26, 2008 By WRN Contributor

Wisconsin Congressman Ron Kind (D-WI) says there's no reason Barack Obama and John McCain should be so close in the polls.

The two presumptive nominees for their parties have been in a dead heat in several recent polls. Speaking to a gathering of Wisconsin's DNC delegates Tuesday morning, Kind said Obama should have a 30 point lead, based on the policies and history of McCain.

Kind accused the Republican of pandering to the right wing of his party by flip-flopping his positions on key issues such as offshore oil drilling and Bush tax cuts. The Wisconsin Democrat also says McCain is out of touch with the majority of Americans, following recent gaffes such as when the Arizona Senator couldn't remember the number of homes he owns.

John McCain's past statements about not having much knowledge of computers, e-mail, and cell phones also drew fire from Kind. He says our economy depends on the use of those technologies, so a President should know how to use them.

Kind says the upcoming election is one about change and Wisconsin Democrats need to help Obama strengthen his lead.
