Badgers pitch back-to-back shutouts

September 8, 2019 By Bill Scott

Jack Coan

For the second straight week, the Wisconsin Badgers pitched a shutout at their opponent, blanking Central Michigan 61-0 on Saturday at Camp Randall Stadium.

Jonathan Taylor, who scored four touchdowns in week one at South Florida, scored four more touchdowns in the week two romp over the Chippewas.  Taylor finished with 102 yards and three touchdowns on 19 rushes and added three receptions for 17 yards and a receiving touchdown.

But this game belonged to junior quarterback Jack Coan.  After a solid performance last week at South Florida, Coan was outstanding in the Badgers home opener.  He set career highs in completions, attempts, yards and touchdowns, going 26-for-33 for 363 yards with three touchdown passes and no interceptions (201.2 pass efficiency rating) in his first start at Camp Randall Stadium.

Coan’s 363 yards are the 5th-highest single-game total in school history and the most by a Badgers quarterback since Tyler Donovan threw for 392 yards against Illinois on Oct. 6, 2007.  Coan became the [Read more…]

Football Badgers blown out by Michigan, Hornibrook struggles

Wisconsin’s beat up defense held its own for a while on Saturday night, but the offense played one of its worst games in recent memory as the Badgers fell to the Michigan Wolverines 38-13 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The Wisconsin defense started the game without starting defensive end Isaiahh Loudermilk (ankle injury).  Starting safety couldn’t go after testing his injured leg in pregame warm-ups.  The other starting safety, Scott Nelson, had to sit the first half after an ejection in the second half last week for targeting.  He returned but quickly left in the third quarter with a left leg injury.  Starting corner Faion Hicks was declared out early with a leg injury.

Despite all of those defensive injury issues, the Badgers played tough against the Wolverines, keeping the game close before eventually wearing down late in the game.

The Badgers got an early touchdown when Kendric Pryor scored on a 33-yard jet sweep early in the second quarter.

The Badgers ground game was good early.  Jonathan Taylor had 79 yards on 11 carries in the first half, but he would get just 22 more yards on the ground in the second half, finishing with 101 yards on 17 carries.

Quarterback Alex Hornibrook finished 7 of 20 for 100 yards and two interceptions.  His first completion of the second half came with five minutes left in the game.  The Badgers finally added a second touchdown when Hornibrook found A.J. Taylor on a three-yard touchdown connection with 3:47 to play.

The Badgers lost the time of possession statistic 37:01 to 22:59 and finished just 2 of 11 on third downs.

Wisconsin dropped to 4-2 overall, 2-1 in the Big Ten.  They’ll return to Madison to host Illinois this Saturday at Camp Randall.

Badgers drop in AP Poll

With Saturday’s loss, the Badgers dropped eight spots from 15th to 23rd in the A.P. Top 25 College Football Poll.  The Badgers started the season ranked number-4.

Michigan secured its best ranking of the season, climbing to sixth.

The Wisconsin Badger defense got off to a good start, holding Western Kentucky to just three points in a 34-3 victory over the Hilltoppers in the season opener on Friday  night at Camp Randall.

Wisconsin replaced seven starters on defense from 2017 but the Badgers looked comfortable from the start.  The Badgers held the Hilltoppers to just three points on four trips inside the UW 20-yard line.

Overall, 12 players made their Badger debut and nine players made their first starts as a Badger.

The Badgers led 24-0 at halftime, thanks in part to a pair of Jonathan Taylor touchdown runs.  Taylor finished with 145 yards on 18 carries to go along with the two scores.  Taylor topped the 100-yard mark for the 11th time in his 15-career games.  He now ranks No. 2 at UW in career rushing average, at 6.69 yards per carry.

Taylor also became the 17th player in UW history to eclipse 2,000 yards rushing for his career.  Taylor reached the 2,000-yard plateau in just 15 career games, the second-fastest in UW history.  Ron Dayne went over 2,000 yards rushing in only 13 games in 1996. [Read more…]
