Packers winning ugly over the Redskins

December 9, 2019 By Bill Scott

Aaron Jones

The Green Bay Packers jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead and held on for a 20-15 win over the Washington Redskins on Sunday at Lambeau Field.

Aaron Jones rushed for a season-high 134 yards and a touchdown on just 16 carries.  Jones also led the Packers in receiving with six receptions for 58 yards and totaled 192 all-purpose yards on the day.  Jones touchdown is his 15th of the season, his 12th rushing touchdown.  His 100-yard rushing day is his third of the season.

Aaron Rodgers finished 18-of-28 for 195 yards and a touchdown to tight end Robert Tonyan.

The Packers (10-3) remain atop the NFC North, a game better than the Minnesota Vikings, who scored a 20-7 win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday. [Read more…]

Taylor caps off record rookie campaign for Badgers

December 31, 2017 By Bill Scott

Jonathan Taylor

After being held in check during the Big Ten Championship game loss to Ohio State, Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor rushed for 130 yards on 26 carries on Saturday night to help the Badgers knock off the Miami Hurricanes 34-24 in the Orange Bowl.

The final performance of the season gave Taylor 1,977 yards, the number-1 mark all-time among FBS Freshmen.  He passed Wisconsin’s Ron Dayne (1,863 yards – 1996) and Oklahoma’s Adrian Peterson (1,925 yards – 2004).

Taylor played in all 14 games for the Badgers, hitting 100 yards in a game 10 times and rushing for at least 200 yards three times.

“It means a lot for me to be mentioned with guys like Adrian Peterson and Ron Dayne,” Taylor said.  “It is humbling.  There won’t ever be any guys like those.  To be mentioned with them, it is a testimony to the offense and to the team.”

Dayne’s rushing total as a freshman doesn’t include his 246-yard performance in the Copper Bowl.  NCAA records didn’t include bowl games before 2002.

Packers looking for running back depth (AUDIO)

March 28, 2017 By Bill Scott

Packers GM Ted Thompson

Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson admitted to reporters on Monday that they need to add to their running back depth chart, but he wasn’t willing to say if they had any interest in free agent Adrian Peterson.

“Let’s all together answer that question,” Thompson said while addressing reporters at the NFL Owners spring meetings in Phoenix.  “We don’t talk about players that are not on our team.  We never have, we never will.  It doesn’t serve a purpose, I don’t think.”

After losing starter Eddie Lacy in free agency to Seattle, the Packers have just three running backs under contract on their roster.  Don Jackson and Christine Michael were both re-signed and converted receiver Ty Montgomery is under contract. [Read more…]

February 19, 2015 By Bill Scott

NFL-LogoThe Green Bay Packers are one of 20-plus NFL teams scheduled to meet with Minnesota Gophers TE Maxx Williams during the league Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

The Packers, with the 30th pick in the first round of the draft, may have a shot at Williams, who is considered to be the best tight end coming out of college this year.

The 6’3, 249 pound Williams, declared for the draft at the age of 20.

What’s next for Adrian Peterson?

November 5, 2014 By Bill Scott

Running back Adrian Peterson avoided jail time on Tuesday, reaching a deal with Texas prosecutors to resolve a child abuse case that revived a national debate about corporal punishment.

Peterson was sentenced to a form of probation after pleading no contest in Texas, to a misdemeanor charge of reckless assault.  It’s not immediately clear how that plea deal would affect his playing status or whether he might be subject to a league suspension.

In the following video, I discuss my thoughts on Peterson at the moment and take a brief look at the Green Bay Packers, who are getting ready for Sunday’s home game against the Chicago Bears.

It took public pressure and sponsorship concerns to sideline Adrian Peterson (Opinion)

September 17, 2014 By Bill Scott

It was just Monday that the Minnesota Vikings thought it was OK for Adrian Peterson to return to the team, ready to play the following Sunday.  Nothing had really changed from the week before when they decided to make him inactive for the teams game against New England.  Yet the change was made and Peterson was back in business.

Less than 48 hours later, Peterson was back on the shelf, this time on the NFL’s exempt/commissioner’s permission list, until his child-abuse case is resolved.  He must stay away from the team while he addresses the charges in Texas.

So what’s changed from Monday until now?

How about public pressure.  How about Minnesota’s governor, who backed the Viking ownership team in the construction of a new indoor facility, and his concerns about having Peterson return to active duty.  And perhaps most of all, how about sponsor discontent. [Read more…]

the Green Bay Packers defense, this time in a 37-34 Vikings victory at the Metrodome.

Peterson’s final carry was for 26 yards to the Packers 11, setting up a Blair Walsh 29-yard field goal, sending the Vikings to victory and into the playoffs as the 6-seed in the NFC.  It also set up a rematch against the Packers at Lambeau Field this Saturday night.

The Peterson tallied 199 total yards on the ground for the day, leaving him 9-yards short of the NFL’s regular season record held by former Rams star Eric Dickerson. [Read more…]

Packers top Vikings, tied with Bears once again (AUDIO)

December 3, 2012 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers ran their divisional winning streak to 10-games with a 23-14 victory over the Minnesota Vikings Sunday at Lambeau Field.

Their hasn’t been too many, if any,  games in 2012 where the running game led the charge but this one was the case.  James Starks and Alex Green combined for 124-yards on 27-carries with Starks adding the teams first rushing TD since Week 5.  After the game, Head Coach Mike McCarthy was pleased with his teams rushing performance…
