Brown was selected by the Phoenix Suns in the second round (50th overall) on Thursday night.

Brown performed well in the NBA combine last month and worked out for 11 teams in the weeks leading up to the draft, including the Suns.  He shot the best of any of the power forwards or centers and tied for the best day of any player at any position.

Brown follows Tom Anderson (1978), Ron Ripley (1979), Tony Bennett (1992) and Jeff Nordgaard (1996) as other Green Bay players that have been drafted by NBA teams.

Brown is ranked number-23 among seniors by Draft Express.

Thanasis Antetokounmpo, brother of Bucks guard-forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, is on the combine roster and is eligible for the June 26 draft.  Thanasis played for Delaware in the NBA D-League last season.

The top three prospects in the draft, Andrew Wiggins, Jabari Parker and Joel Embiid, have opted not to participate in the combine.

Workouts are set for Thursday and Friday at Quest Multisport on Chicago’s west side.

Draft pool by Sunday.  That’s the last day that underclassmen can declare for the draft.

Green Bay head coach Brian Wardle sought input from the NBA’s advisory committee about Sykes, much like he did for Alec Brown last season.  The committee offers players the opportunity to see where they might be drafted.

Sykes was the Horizon League Player of the Year after averaging 20.3 points, 4.9 assists and 4.4 rebounds this season.  He scored in double figures in 29 of 30 games.

Sykes’ teammate, senior Alec Brown is working out in California, hoping to get selected in the June 26th draft.  He’s trying to become the sixth player in program history to do so.

Wardle, Sykes and Brown claim top Horizon League honors

March 3, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Phoenix men’s basketball team seemingly grabbed all of the

Brian Wardle

Horizon League postseason hardware.

Head coach Brian Wardle was named Coach of the Year, junior guard Keifer Sykes was named Player of the Year and senior Alec Brown was named the Defensive Player of the Year.  Green Bay becomes just the second team to claim each of those three honors in the same season (Butler, 2009-10).

Sykes and Brown were each voted to the 2013-14 All-Horizon League First-Team while Brown was joined by sophomore Jordan Fouse on the Horizon League All-Defensive Team.

Wardle is the third Phoenix coach in its Division 1 history to earn Coach of the Year accolades (Dick Bennett, 1990-91 and 1991-92; Mike Heideman, 1995-96). Sykes becomes just the third player (Tony Bennett, Jeff Nordgaard) in Green Bay’s Division I program history to earn conference player of the year honors and the first since Nordgaard in 1995-96.  Brown joins Terry Evans (2007-08) as the only two Phoenix players to win Defensive Player of the Year.

basketball team has won a regular season league title.  The drought came to an end on Thursday night at the Resch Center in Green Bay.

The Phoenix knocked off Valparaiso 67-53 at the Resch Center, clinching at least a share of the Horizon League title and earning the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament in March.

Keifer Sykes scored 19 points and Alec Brown added 14 points and eight blocked shots in the win.  Brown has 301 career blocks and is now nine shy of setting the Horizon League record.

The Phoenix (22-5, 12-2 HL) avenged a 15-point loss to the Crusaders earlier this season.

January 29, 2014 By Bill Scott

UW-Green Bay Phoenix 7’1 senior center Alec Brown didn’t practice on

Tuesday and his status is uncertain for tonight’s road game at Valparaiso.

Brown averages 16.4 points a game for the Phoenix.  He’s helped his team win 12-straight games.

Brown has played in all 116 games since arriving on the Green Bay campus in 2010, but is dealing with a shoulder injury from Sunday’s win against Detroit.

Green Bay is averaging 77.8 ppg on offense (2nd in Horizon League) and
64.9 ppg on defense (also 2nd in HL).

If Brown can’t play tonight, the job could go to freshman Kenneth Lowe (Little Chute), who is averaging 3.6 points and 3.4 rebounds a game in his first college season.
