Aleem Ford scored a career-high 19 points on Tuesday night, helping the Wisconsin Badgers knock off the Purdue Boilermakers 69-65 in Big Ten action at the Kohl Center.

Wisconsin (16-10, 9-6 Big Ten) built a second half lead and then held on to beat the Boilermakers (14-13, 7-9).

The Badgers are the best free throw shooting team in the Big Ten and again let everyone know why.  The Badgers hit 19 of 20 from the stripe (95%), including 12-straight down the stretch and eight-straight in the final 28 seconds.

With the Badgers up 61-59 late, Sasha Stefanovic had two 3-point attempts with less than a minute left [Read more…]

Badgers rebound with win over Buckeyes

February 10, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers scored the final 16 points of the first half and led by 18 at the halftime break, on the way to a 70-57 win over the Ohio State Buckeyes on Sunday at the Kohl Center.

Brevin Pritzl scored 19 points off the bench, including 5-of-6 from three, as the Badgers improved to 14-10 overall and 7-6 in Big Ten play.

The Badgers hit 8-of-18 three pointers in the first half and finished 12 of 32 for the game (37.5%).

The Buckeyes shot just 32% from the field in the first half.  That, along with their nine first half turnovers allowed the Badgers to go on a 31-7 run over the final 10-plus minutes.

The Badgers defensively didn’t allow the Buckeyes to get comfortable and held the Big Ten’s top three-point shooting team to 6 of 19 from distance (31.6%).  UW put an end to Ohio State’s three-game winning streak.

Aleem Ford also scored in double figures, finishing with 10 points and nine rebounds in the win.

The Badgers moved into a tie with Purdue with both teams trailing first place Maryland by 2 1/2 games.  The win over the Buckeyes is the second of the season for UW.

Wisconsin gets a couple of days off before returning to practice on Wednesday and facing the Cornhuskers in Nebraska on Saturday.

UW honored the 2000 Final Four team, coached by Dick Bennett at halftime on Sunday.

Badgers wrap up non-conference schedule with win over Rider

January 1, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers struggled against Rider’s zone defense in the first half, but Rider struggled even more against Wisconsin’s defense.  They fell to the Badgers 65-37 on Tuesday night in Wisconsin’s final non-conference tuneup of the season.

Rider shot just 16.7% from the field in the first half ans 24.6% for the game.

Nate Reuvers scored 15 points to lead four players in double figures.  Aleem Ford had 14 points while Brad Davison and Brevin Pritzl added 11 each.

Wisconsin (8-5) and Rider (7-4) combined to miss 21 of their first 23 shots from the field to start the game.

Pritzl was Wisconsin’s offense, hitting three 3-pointers in the first nine-plus minutes of the first half.  He scored all 11 of his points in the first half as the Badgers took a 21-11 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Davison came out of the locker room and hit three straight three’s for the Badgers to start the second half.  Two D’Mitrik Trice threes opened Wisconsin’s lead to 48-21 just seven minutes into the second half.

The Badgers improved to 7-0 at the Kohl Center this season and will resume Big Ten play on Friday night at 5th ranked Ohio State.

Badgers lock up Howard and pull away to beat rival Marquette

November 18, 2019 By Bill Scott

Marquette’s All-American senior guard Markus Howard poured in 16 points on 6 of 12 shooting in the first half, but the Wisconsin Badgers made life much tougher on Howard in the second half and pulled out a 77-61 win over the Golden Eagles at the Kohl Center.

Howard missed all nine of his shots in the second half, making only a pair of free throws.

“Honestly, it was a team effort,” Badger guard D’Mitrik Trice said.  “We know he’s a great, great scorer.  He’s one of the best in college basketball, so we knew it was going to take all of us to lock him up on defense.  We knew it would lead to offense.”

Trice finished with 10 points, one of six Badgers scoring in double figures.  Brevin Pritzl led the way with 15 points and 13 rebounds.  Brad Davison also had 15 points in the win.  Aleem Ford added 12 points. [Read more…]

Badgers wake up in second half to pull away to victory

November 14, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers had to dig a little deeper on their bench on Wednesday night but eventually pulled away to beat McNeese State 83-63 at the Kohl Center.

The Badgers were short-handed to start, playing with old Kobe King who injured his ankle in practice on Monday.  Then they had to deal with Nate Reuvers foul trouble for much of the game.

With the Badgers off to a slow start, coach Greg Gard went to his bench and called on the likes of Tyler Wahl and Walt McGrory.  McGrory is a walk-on and one of his biggest roles is testing the starters in practice as a member of the scout team.

McGrory had combined for just 11 points in 22 games in his first two seasons, hadn’t played in the Badgers first two games.  But he set a personal best with 24 minutes and a career high 9 points last night.

It was McGrory and Brad Davison who supplied most of the first half firepower.  Davison finished with a season high 24-points, making 3 of 4 three-pointers, 7 of 8 shots overall and a perfect 7 of 7 at the free throw line. [Read more…]

Badgers drop season opener in overtime

November 6, 2019 By Bill Scott

Jordan Ford scored 26 points and Malik Fitts added 16 to lead 20th ranked Saint Mary’s of California to a 65-63 overtime victory over the Wisconsin Badgers on Tuesday night in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

The Badgers led by as many as eight points in the first half, but had to overcome a nine-point deficit in the second to force overtime.

In overtime, D’Mitrik Trice hit a jumper to give the Badgers a 63-60 lead, but the Badgers went scoreless for the final two-plus minutes to fall short.

The Badgers had a chance to win in regulation, but Aleem Ford’s three point attempt failed to hit iron.  Ford found the ball in his hands again for a chance at a game winner in overtime, but again his long three point attempt never drew iron.

Nate Reuvers led the Badgers with 22 points.  Brad Davison added 16 and Trice finished with 10.

Redshirt junior forward Micah Potter was allowed to travel with the team, but couldn’t play because the NCAA still deems him ineligible.  A final request for reinstatement is headed to the NCAA Committee for Legislative Relief for a final review and decision.

The Badgers return to action on Friday night when they host Eastern Illinois at the Kohl Center.

Badgers take down unbeaten Michigan

January 20, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers ended their two-game Big Ten losing streak, knocking off previously unbeaten Michigan 64-54 on Saturday at the Kohl Center.

Wisconsin (12-6, 4-3 Big Ten) got a huge performance from their best player, senior Ethan Happ.  He scored 26 points and added 10-rebounds and seven assists for the Badgers.  No other Badger player scored in double figures, but five other Badgers scored at least six points.

Nathan Reuvers and Aleem Ford had nine points each.  Brad Davison added eight points.  D’Mitrick Trice and Kobe King each tallied six points.  King also added five rebounds.

Neither team spent much time at the free throw line.  Michigan hit just 5 of 11, while the Badgers were 7 of 9 with Happ hitting two out of four in the final two-plus minutes of the game. [Read more…]

The Wisconsin Badgers stayed with the Iowa Hawkeyes in their Big Ten opener in Iowa City and in the end, pulled out a 72-66 victory.

Ethan Happ fouled out with 45.8 seconds left, but the Badgers still got a big three-pointer from D’Mitrik Trice with 20 seconds left.  Then it was Brad Davison and Trice hitting some key free throws to maintain a two possession lead to give the Badgers (7-1, 1-0 Big Ten) the win.

The Hawkeyes led for much of the second half.  Their biggest lead was eight early on, but the Badgers made several small runs to keep the game within striking distance.

Trice had 20 points to lead the Badgers, hitting 4 of 8 three-pointers.  Happ left with 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists.  Brevin Pritzl came up big off the bench with 12 points and four rebounds.

The Badgers had to deal with foul trouble throughout as Nate Reuvers, Aleem Ford, Khalil Iverson and Davison all spent extra time on the sidelines.

Iowa was led by Tyler Cook with 19 points and 15 rebounds.

Wisconsin’s Ford to undergo knee surgery

October 31, 2018 By Bill Scott

Wisconsin men’s basketball sophomore forward Aleem Ford suffered a knee injury and will undergo surgery on Wednesday.  The UW Sports Medicine Staff says Ford will be out indefinitely, but is expected to return to the Badgers later this season.

Ford appeared in 33 games last season as a redshirt freshman, starting 20 of them.  He averaged 5.8 points and 2.8 rebounds, while shooting a team-high 40.9 percent (45-110) from 3-point range.  Ford’s 45 three-pointers ranked as the fifth-highest freshman total in UW history.

Wisconsin opens the 2018019 season with an exhibition game against UW-Oshkosh on Friday and will begin the regular season on Nov. 6 against Coppin State.

Badgers drop 5th straight, falling just short at Maryland

February 4, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers were in position to pull out a road win but fell short at Maryland, losing to the Terrapins 68-63.

The Badgers trailed by ten points at halftime before coming back to lead by two points on a number of occasions in the final minutes.  Then, down by five, the Badgers erased a 65-60 deficit but Maryland would outscore UW 8-3 over the final 1:25 to pull out the win.

It’s the fifth straight loss for Wisconsin (10-15, 3-9 Big Ten), dropping them into a tie for 10th in the Big Ten with Minnesota and Iowa.  The losing streak is the longest for the Badgers since they dropped six straight during the 2008-’09 season.

The loss also means the Badgers can’t finish above .500 in Big Ten play.  The last time Wisconsin finished at .500 or worse in Big Ten play was 1999-2000 when they finished 8-8 under Dick Bennett.  But that team reached the NCAA Tournament and eventually the Final Four.

Ethan Happ had 18 points and 9 rebounds to lead the Badgers.  Nate Reuvers added 13 with Aleem Ford and Brad Davison each finishing with 12 points.

The Badgers, down 3, had a chance to tie the game with 9.8 seconds left.  But Davison decided to drive inside instead of going for a three-point shot.  He missed and the Terripins would make two final free throws for the final margin.
