Brewers re-sign Claudio to 1-year deal

December 9, 2019 By Bill Scott

After non-tendering reliever Alex Claudio last week instead of going to arbitration, the Brewers signed the left-hander to a one-year deal worth a reported $1.75 million.

Claudio was projected to earn $2.2 million in arbitration, which means the Brewers saved around $450,000 by going the non-tender rout and then bringing him back for more of a club friendly deal.

Claudio was used mostly against lefties last season, appearing in 83 games but pitching just 62 innings.  He allowed 57 hits and 24 walks while striking out 44, finishing 2-2 with a 4.06 ERA and a 1.306 WHIP.

This coming season, a rule change goes into affect forcing relievers to face a minimum of three hitters if an inning is still in progress.  That would force Claudio to face right handed hitters as well.

The Brewers also claimed utility infielder Ronny Rodriguez off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.  He hit .221 in 84 games with 14 home runs and 43 RBI.

The moves leave the Brewers with 34 players on their 40-man roster as the Winter Baseball Meetings continue in San Diego.

Brewers win series opener against the Padres

September 17, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers opened their final home stand of the 2019 regular season by knocking off the San Diego Padres 5-1 at Miller Park on Monday night.

Cory Spangenberg drove in three runs with a run scoring single and a two-run triple and Travis Shaw added a pinch hit home run, his first in yearly three months to power the Brewers.

The Brewers won for the 10th time in the last 11 games, remaining one game behind the Chicago Cubs for the second National League wild card spot.  By way of Washington’s 4-2 loss in St. Louis, the Brewers are now within 1 1/2 games of the Nationals for the top wild card position.

San Diego’s only run came in the fourth when Eric Hosmer’s double scored Manny Machado to tie the game 1-1.  Spangenberg broke the tie with a two-run triple.

Zach Davies (10-7) earned the win, allowing a run on two hits and a walk while striking out four.

Freddy Peralta, Alex Claudio and Jay Jackson finished up to seal the Brewers victory.

Brewers win in extra’s, despite 24 K’s

June 13, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers went down via the strikeout 24 times on Wednesday night, yet still hit four home runs to pull out a 6-3 win over the Houston Astros in 14-innings at Minute Maid Park in Houston.

Mike Moustakas clubbed a go-ahead, two-run homer in the 14th inning, his 21st of the season, to send the Brewers to victory.

Ryan Braun, Yasmani Grandal and Eric Thames also clubbed solo home runs for the Brewers.  Thames blast in the 7th pulled the Brewers into a 3-3 tie.  All three solo homers came off of Houston ace Justin Verlander, who struck out a career high 15 Brewers in seven innings of work. [Read more…]

Twins break open scoreless game with 5-run seventh

May 29, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers and Minnesota Twins were deadlocked in a scoreless battle through six-and-a-half innings on Tuesday night at Target Field.  When the Brewers went to their bullpen, the Twins put a 5-spot on the board and went on to post a 5-3 victory.

Twins left-hander Devin Smeltzer tossed six shutout innings and Brewers right-hander Zach Davies was equal to the task.  Then came the home half of the 7th when the Twins got to Brewer relievers Alex Claudio and Junior Guerra.

Jason Castro led off with a single to left and a Keston Hiura error put runners at the corners.  Max KLepler followed with a two-run double to right to put the Twins on the board 2-0. [Read more…]

Aguilar ends home run drought in win over Rockies

April 30, 2019 By Bill Scott

Jesus Aguilar has been mired in an early season hitting slump.  The Brewers first baseman is hoping his performance on Monday night will pull him out of that slump.

Aguilar had three hits and four rbi’s, including his first two home runs of the season as the Brewers knocked off the Colorado Rockies 5-1 in their series opener at Miller Park.

The three-hit night for Aguilar, raised his average to .156.

Brewers drop second straight to Angels

April 10, 2019 By Bill Scott

Mike Moustakas

The Milwaukee Brewers fell behind 6-0, rebounded to take an 8-7 lead, before falling to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 11-8 on Tuesday night.

It’s the third time in the last five games that the Brewers pitching staff has allowed at least 10 runs.

Tommy La Stella capped off the Angels six-run first inning with a three run home run.  It was his second long ball of the season and second in as many games.

Former Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy drove in three runs in the win.  He drew a bases loaded walk in the seventh that pushed across the winning run.

Brewer pitchers walked six batters in the loss.  Two of the six came in the 8th off of Jake Petricka as the Angels scored twice to add to their lead and pull out the win.

Angels outfielder Mike Trout left the game early with a strained groin and is listed as day-to-day.  That could keep him out of tonight’s series finale.

Yasmani Grandal homered twice and Mike Moustakas also went deep for the Brewers.

Freddy Peralta got the start for the Brewers but managed just 3 1/3 innings before giving way to the bullpen.  He allowed 7 earned runs on 8 hits with two walks and two home runs.  Peralta saw his ERA climb to 6.91.

Alex Claudio took the loss in relief.

Brandon Woodruff (1-0, 6.00) gets the start for the Brewers in the series finale.  Felix Pena (0-1, 4.50) gets the nod for the Angels.

Brewers acquire left-handed reliever from the Rangers

December 13, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers have acquired left-handed pitcher Alex Claudio from the Texas Rangers in exchange for Competitive Round A pick in the 2019 First-Year Player Draft.

Claudio, who turns 27 on January 31, is 13-6 with a 3.20 ERA and 12 saves in 208 career games (2 starts) over five Major League seasons, all with Texas.  He went 4-2 with a 4.48 ERA and 1 save in a team-leading 66 games (1 start) in 2018.  Claudio led the Rangers in appearances for the second straight season.

Claudio posted a 1.80 ERA over his last 11 appearances in 2018 (10 ip, 2 er) as opponents hit just .206 during that stretch.

Brewers sign Nelson

The Brewers avoided arbitration with right-handed pitcher Jimmy Nelson, signing him to a $3.7 million deal for next season.

Nelson missed all of last season while rehabbing from right shoulder surgery.  He’s expected to go to training camp this spring as a full participant.  He’ll be battling with a big group of starting pitchers for spots in the rotation.  That group includes Jhoulys Chacin, Chase Anderson, Zach Davis, Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff, Freddy Peralta, Junior Guerra and Adrian Houser.

It’s possible the Brewers will take it slow with Nelson, but barring any setbacks, he is expected to pitch in Milwaukee this coming season.
