Packers trim roster to 53 players on Saturday

September 6, 2020 By Bill Scott

Jake Kumerow

The Green Bay Packers trimmed their roster to the regular season roster limit of 53 players on Saturday.  The only real surprises came when the Packers parted company with wide receiver Jake Kumerow and left tackle Alex Light.

The Packers elected to keep Malik Taylor as their fifth receiver, instead of hanging on to Kumerow, who finished ninth on the team with just 12 catches last season.

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, in a Thursday interview on Sirus XM NFL Radio, was busy going to bat for Kumerow.

“Jake Kumerow has been such a solid performer for us for the last couple years,” Rodgers said.  “I love his reliability.  I  think he’s a fantastic, steady player who’s very heady on the field, he makes plays.  He plays with a lot of confidence, and he’s a guy you love having on the squad.” [Read more…]

Packers add veteran tackle to the mix

November 27, 2019 By Bill Scott

Billy Turner

With Bryan Bulaga leaving last Sunday’s game against San Francisco with a sprained MCL, the Green Bay Packers have added a veteran offensive lineman to the mix.

The Packers Wednesday claimed retired veteran Jared Veldheer off waivers from the New England Patriots.  The 32-year old Veldheer never played for the Patriots after signing a 1-year, $3.5 million deal during the offseason.  He instead, retired during the Patriots offseason program.

Healthy again, the Patriots released him from the reserve/retired list this week and the Packers were awarded Veldheer on a waiver claim.

Bulaga is expected to miss at least a week and maybe more, but his injury isn’t expected to be season ending.  Alex Light took over during Sunday night’s loss to the 49ers but struggled.

It’s possible that Billy Turner will move from right guard to right tackle and have the Packers insert Lucas Patrick into the lineup at right guard.  But coach Matt LaFleur said they’ll take the week to make a decision as to what way they want to go.

Veldheer has played in 118 career games, including 113 starts.  He has spent time with the Raiders, Cardinals and Broncos.  Veldheer was originally a third-round pick by the Raiders in 2010.  The Packers selected Bulaga with the 23rd pick in the first round of that draft.

Bakhtiari returns, listed as questionable for Sunday

September 13, 2019 By Bill Scott

David Bakhtiari

After missing practice on Thursday with a sore back, Green Bay Packers left tackle David Bakhtiari returned to practice with the Packers on Friday and is officially listed as questionable on the team’s Friday injury report.

Bakhtiari said his back began “not cooperating” after a practice this week.  He was a limited participant on Wednesday.

“I think we’re going to monitor the next 48 hours and see how it is.  Obviously, we have a lot of time.  So, hopefully,” Bakhtiari said.

Bakhtiari missed the practice reps that would have helped him prepare for Minnesota defensive end Everson Griffen. [Read more…]
