Packers getting healthier coming out of bye week

October 13, 2020 By Bill Scott

Kamal Martin

While not totally healthy, the Green Bay Packers are getting closer as they come out of their early week five bye week.

With two spots open on the 53-man roster, the Packers welcomed back rookie inside linebacker Kamal Martin and wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown to the practice field on Monday.  Both players can return to the 53-man roster at any time over the next three weeks.

Martin turned heads in training camp, even without the benefit of an on-field offseason program or preseason games.  He was in line to start next to veteran Christian Kirksey before injuring his left knee in practice in late August and having surgery the very next day.

There’s a chance Martin could be ready to go when the Packers face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday in Tampa.

St. Brown also is returning from a knee injury that he suffered in training camp and would be a welcomed addition.  Even though Davante Adams is expected to return to the lineup this week after missing time with a hamstring injury, The Packers are still light at wide receiver after Allen Lazard was sidelined with a core muscle injury.

Packers lose rookie TE Deguara to torn ACL

October 7, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers lost their third-round draft pick, TE Josiah Deguara to a season-ending knee injury in Monday’s 30-16 win over the Atlanta Falcons at Lambeau Field.

Deguara was hurt while blocking on a punt and had already missed the two previous games with an ankle injury.

“Unfortunately, it looks to be a pretty bad one,” coach Matt LaFleur said Tuesday,  “So, you know, I hurt for Josiah.  I love what he’s all about, the mentality he brings and he’s certainly somebody we were really excited about.  And it’s been a little bit of a roller coaster because in terms of I thought he had a great game vs. Minnesota in Week 1, and then he goes out with an ankle injury, you know; it’s just been, it’s been tough.  But we expect him to bounce back from it and we still think he has a really bright future in this league.” [Read more…]

Packers receiver Lazard out indefinitely

October 2, 2020 By Bill Scott

WR Allen Lazard

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Allen Lazard had a career game last Sunday night (6 receptions for 146 yards and a touchdown).  He played the entire game and there was no indication afterwards in speaking with reporters that he had suffered an injury.  Yet, as ESPN first reported, Lazard underwent core muscle surgery and is out indefinitely.  The team listed him on their injury report Thursday with a core muscle injury.

Fellow receiver Davante Adams practiced on Thursday.  He said afterwards that he still doesn’t know if he’ll be available to play on Monday night against the Atlanta Falcons.

At the moment, the Packers have three other receivers on their active roster.  Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Darrius Shepherd and Malik Taylor.  Shepherd was signed off the practice squad last week. [Read more…]

September 28, 2020 By Bill Scott

WR Allen Lazard receives game ball following win over the Saints.

The Green Bay Packers continued putting up big numbers on offense, improving to 3-0 on the season with a 37-30 win over the New Orleans Saints (1-2) on Sunday night at the Superdome in New Orleans.

Aaron Rodgers passed for 283 yards and three touchdowns and the Packers scored 10 points in the final nine minutes to break a 27-27 tie and secured the victory.

Playing without their top receiver Davante Adams (hamstring), Rodgers turned to number two receiver Allen Lazard, who caught six passes for 146 yards and a touchdown.

Saints running back Alvin Kamara gained 197 yards from scrimmage, scoring a pair of touchdowns.  His 52-yard reception included four broken/missed tackles on the way to the end zone to tie the game at 27. [Read more…]

Packers display plenty of offense in season opening win (AUDIO)

September 14, 2020 By Bill Scott

Packers beat Vikings in empty U.S. Bank Stadium

When the Green Bay Packers didn’t draft a wide receiver in the NFL Draft, many thought the Packers offense would be in trouble.  But a second year in Matt LaFleur’s system appears to be more important, at least after the first week of the new season.

Aaron Rodgers completed 32-of-44 for 364 yards and four touchdowns in the Packers 43-34 season opening win over the Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday.  Two of the four touchdown receptions were to the Packers number-one receiver, Davante Adams.  Adams was targeted 17 times and caught 14 passes, tying Don Hutson’s 1942 franchise record of 14 receptions in a single game.

Rodgers also tossed touchdown passes to Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Allen Lazard, finishing with a quarterback rating of 127.5.  His four touchdown passes moved him past Eli Manning and into seventh place on the all-time list with 368.

It was a dominating offensive performance for the Packers, who racked up 522 total yards of offense in the win.  They [Read more…]

Packers release QB Manny Wilkins

April 28, 2020 By Bill Scott

After drafting quarterback Jordan Love in the opening round of the NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers reduced their quarterback stable by one, releasing Manny Wilkins on Monday.

Wilkins signed with the Packers as an undrafted free agent last year and was in the mix to be Aaron Rodgers’ backup before being released after training camp.

Wilkins later returned and spent the season on the Packers practice squad.

Lazard, Sullivan sign tenders

Wide receiver Allen Lazard and cornerback Chandon Sullivan are back for 2020.  They each signed their exclusive rights tender, guaranteeing their return for the season.  It allows both to take part in the Packers virtual offseason program, which started on Monday.

Lazard had 35 catches for 477 yards and three touchdowns last year, while Sullivan had 30 tackles and an interception.

Bulaga gets three-year deal with the Chargers

March 18, 2020 By Bill Scott

Bryan Bulaga

Bryan Bulaga had spent his entire career with the Green Bay Packers, after being drafted in the first round back in 2010.  On Tuesday, Bulaga agreed to a three-year, $30-million deal with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Bulaga started 111 of his 115 games, having gone through a pair of ACL injuries in 2013 and 2017.

The Packers counted on Bulaga’s leadership during his time in Green Bay.  They’ll now look to veterans David Bakhtiari and Corey Linsley for some of that responsibility.

The Packers did sign tackle Rick Wagner, the former Badger from West Allis, to replace Bulaga.  Wagner has started 87 of his 102 games and was released by the Detroit Lions in a cost-cutting measure.

Packers in the market for a wide receivers coach

January 30, 2020 By Bill Scott

Davante Adams

The Green Bay Packers are looking for a wide receivers coach after head coach Matt LaFleur fired Alvis Whitted last week.  The move was first reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Davante Adams led the Packers with 83 catches for 997 yards and five touchdowns, despite missing four games with a turf toe injury.  But no other receiver performed with any consistency and wideouts Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Geronimo Allison both took a step backwards.

Running backs Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams had 49 and 39 receptions respectively and tight end Jimmy Graham added 38 catches.  All three had more catches than the number two receiver, which by the end of the season became Allen Lazard with 35.

Valdes-Scantling followed a solid rookie season with just 26 receptions for 452 yards and two touchdowns.  By the end of the season, Aaron Rodgers hardly made an effort to throw him the ball.  In fact, Valdes-Scantling just just five catches over the last nine regular-season games.

Whitted is the second assistant coach to leave the Packers coaching staff.  Jason Simmons left to take a job with the Carolina Panthers.  The Packers replaced Simmons by hiring former Minnesota Vikings defensive backs coach Jerry Gray.

Packers rebound to beat Lions, secure number-2 seed in NFC Playoffs

December 30, 2019 By Bill Scott

Mason Crosby

The Green Bay Packers had everything to play for with a first round playoff bye on the line, but it looked like the Detroit Lions were the team that had a sense of urgency.

The Lions jumped out to an early lead and took a 17-3 advantage at halftime before falling to the Packers 23-20 in the regular season finale at Ford Field.

The Packers (13-3) came out flat and managed just 136 total net yards in the first half.  Quarterback Aaron Rodgers completed just 6 of 18 for 90 yards and a passer rating of 50.7 in the half.

Rodgers struggled with overthrows, finishing with 16 overthrown balls for the game.  That is a career high and a NFL high for overthrows.

Rodgers finished 27 of 55 for 323 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.  He connected on less than half of his pass attempts for the second [Read more…]

December 2, 2019 By Bill Scott

Allen Lazard

Aaron Rodgers tossed four touchdown passes to lead the Green Bay Packers to a 31-13 win over the New York Giants on Sunday.

Rodgers completed 21 of 33 for 243 yards with rain, sleet and eventually heavy snow falling.

Rodgers hit Davante Adams on touchdown passes of 8 and 17 yards, Allen Lazard for 37 yards and veteran Marcedes Lewis on a short 1-yard touchdown pass.

The Packers also intercepted rookie Daniel Jones three times, winning the turnover battle 3-0.

The loss sent the Giants (2-10) to their eighth straight loss, their worst losing streak in 15 years.
