Green Bay women advance to Horizon League title game

The 22nd-ranked Green Bay Phoenix (28-3) women knocked off Youngstown State 66-45 in Monday’s semifinals of the Horizon League Tournament in Detroit.

Green Bay trailed 28-26 at halftime but outscored the Penguins 21-5 in the third quarter and 40-17 in the second half.  The Phoenix shot 58.6% from the field in the final 20 minutes.

With the win, Green Bay has now won 10-straight HL tournament games and also won its 10th-straight game over the Penguins (16-15) in the process. [Read more…]

Green Bay women secure 20th straight Horizon League title

The Green Bay Phoenix women’s basketball team secured its 20th-consecutive regular-season conference championship at the Kress Center on Friday night, knocking off Oakland 78-48.

The Phoenix had already clinched a share of the title with Monday’s win over UIC, then Green Bay (25-3, 15-2 HL) won the title outright against the Golden Grizzlies.

Senior guard Allie LeClaire scored 13-points to move into the top 10 on Green Bay’s all-time scoring list.  LeClaire has 1,393 points in her career.

Green Bay led 22-13 after the first quarter and 40-22 at halftime.

Senior forward Jessica Lindstrom scored a game-high 16 points and 12 rebounds, her 15th double-double of the season and 38th of her career.

It is the 17th time in the unrivaled streak that Green Bay has secured the championship outright.

Green Bay wraps up the regular season on Sunday when the Phoenix welcomes Detroit Mercy to the Kress Center for a 1 p.m. Senior Day and Parents’ Day.

The Phoenix will be the number 1 seed at the Horizon League Tournament in Detroit, Michigan, with its first action coming in the Quarterfinals on March 3.

Milwaukee rolls past Detroit

In Milwaukee, the Panther women doubled up Detroit 90-45.  The 45 point victory margin is the third largest in school history.

Green Bay wins at Northwestern

Allie LeClaire led all scorers with a season-high 22 points, leading the No. 21/23 Green Bay Phoenix (10-1) to a 63-57 win over the Northwestern Wildcats (6-7) in Evanston on Tuesday.  The Phoenix improved to 10-1, capping its best start through non-conference play since the 2011-12 campaign.

Green Bay opened the game on a 7-0 run and led early 21-9 before the Wildcats started to put things together and make it a game.

The Phoenix secured its second win over a Big Ten program this season, having defeated in-state rival Wisconsin earlier in the season, 67-34.

Superior native Jessica Lindstrom tallied her fifth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds in 35 minutes.  Caitlyn Hibner added 14 points on 5-for-10 shooting.

The Phoenix get some time off now.  They open Horizon League play on December 28 against Wright State in Dayton, Ohio.

Phoenix women favored to win 20th-consecutive HL Championship

For the 10th-consecutive year, the Green Bay Phoenix women’s basketball team will enter the season as the Horizon League preseason favorite.

Green Bay is fresh off its 19th-straight Horizon League Regular-Season Championship.  Head coach Kevin Borseth’s Phoenix squad received 21 of the 25 first-place votes in the poll and accumulated 246 points to lead the nearest school by 42 (Wright State).

Senior Jessica Lindstrom was selected to the preseason first-team after averaging 13.1 points and a team-high 9.8 rebounds a game last season.  Lindstrom received second team honors last season, as well as all-defensive team recognition back-to-back seasons.  The Superior native was named Horizon League Tournament MVP after scoring 15 points and grabbing nine rebounds in the championship game.

Fellow senior Allie LeClaire was named to the all-league second team after averaging 11.0 points a game and a team-best 3.8 assists per game.  The Green Bay, Wis., native was also the 35th player in program history to surpass the 1,000-point mark for Green Bay, doing so last season.

Green Bay will face UW-Whitewater in an exhibition on Thursday, October 26 (7 p.m.).

Green Bay Phoenix return to NCAA Tournament

The Green Bay Phoenix will return to the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season and 17th time overall, knocking off Detroit 64-52 to win the Horizon League Tournament championship.

It was the seventh straight appearance in the title game for Green Bay, which led wire-to-wire, holding the Titans to 35% shooting from the field.

Junior Allie LeClaire poured in 19 points, including 15 in the second half when she surpassed 1,000 points in her career.  Fellow junior Jessica Lindstrom added 15 points and nine rebounds and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Rosanna Reynolds scored a game-high 25 points for Detroit.

The Phoenix will find out its NCAA first-round opponent on Monday.

Green Bay rolls past Marquette

The Green Bay Phoenix women’s basketball team started hot, jumping out to a 16-3 lead.  They went on to knock off the Marquette Golden Eagles 78-63 at the Al McGuire Center.

Superior Junior Jessica Lindstrom scored a career-high 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to secure her fifth double-double of the season.

Marquette attempted to rally in the third quarter and lowered Green Bay’s lead to nine points with 44 seconds remaining in the period, but the Phoenix withstood the rally moving forward.

Mehryn Kraker added 19 points (7-of-12) and finished with a team-high four assists in 38 minutes.  Allie LeClaire added 15 points.

Sophomore Nitisha Hiedeman had 17 points to lead Marquette.

The victory improved Green Bay’s all-time record against Marquette to 34-8, winning seven of the last eight meetings between the programs.

The Phoenix next face mid-major power South Dakota State on Friday.

Wisconsin falls at home

The Wisconsin Badger women shot just 25% on Tuesday night at the Kohl Center, falling to Idaho State 42-35.

Phoenix win women’s Horizon League opener

Preseason favorite Green Bay started their Horizon League season with a convincing 63-42 win over rival Milwaukee on Friday afternoon at the Klotsche Center.

The Panthers (5-6, 0-1 HL) shot just 24.5% from the field, including just five of 20 from three-point range.

The Phoenix (11-2, 1-0) outscored the Panthers 28-12 in the paint, winning their eighth straight game.

Guard Kaili Lukan hit 8-of-12 from the field to lead Green Bay with 17 points.  Allie LeClaire added 15 points and center Lexi Weitzer pulled down 16 rebounds.

For the Panthers, sophomore guard Jenny Lindner was the only player in double figures with 12 points.

Green Bay women land spot in NCAA field

Tesha Buck scored 24 points and freshman Allie LeClaire added 17 as the Green Bay Phoenix women knocked off Wright State 86-77 in overtime, laying claim to the Horizon League Tournament championship.

Green Bay (28-4) improved to 13-4 all time in Horizon League Championship games.  They avenged a loss to the Raiders in last years Tournament Championship game.

Green Bay women crush Marquette in opener

Five players scored in double figures to open the season and the Green Bay Phoenix women’s basketball team cruised to a 94-66 rout of Marquette on Saturday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center in Milwaukee.

The Phoenix (1-0) earned its eighth straight win in season openers, after the Green Bay bench accounted for 52 points, led by freshman Allie LeClaire’s team-leading 15 points.

Green Bay led 23-20 in the first half, then closed out on a 15-1 run to take a 41-25 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

Mehryn Kraker and Ellen Edison added 13 points each while freshman Jessica Lindstrom (Superior) scored 12 points in her debut and Sam Terry added 11 for the Phoenix.

Green Bay shot 57% for the game, while Marquette was held to 36% (16-44).  Green Bay also forced the Golden Eagles into 23 turnovers.  The 94 points scored are the most since the 2012-13 season, when the Phoenix put up 99 against UIC.
