Green Bay Phoenix win third straight, sweep Oakland

After dropping nine straight games to start the season, the Green Bay Phoenix have won three-straight, earning a two game sweep over Oakland in Green Bay over the weekend.

Amari Davis poured in 25 points for the Phoenix as they knocked off Oakland in the series finale on Saturday, 87-78.  The Phoenix also got 37 points from their bench in the victory, handing coach Will Ryan his third victory in Green Bay.

Green Bay’s 87 points is its second-highest total of the season, only behind the 91-points they scored against Eastern Illinois in double overtime.

Green Bay is scheduled to head to Detroit for a two-game weekend series, Friday and Saturday at Calihan Hall.

Green Bay Phoenix Drop To 0-8

Despite guard Amari Davis pouring in a career-high 35 points, the Green Bay Phoenix dropped to 0-8, falling to the Wright State Raiders on Sunday, 90-77 in Dayton, Ohio.

The Raiders swept the two-game weekend series, winning their sixth straight and improving to 4-0 in Horizon League play.

The Phoenix shot a season best 51.7% (15-of-29) from the field in the first half and took a 39-36 lead to the locker room at halftime.  Twenty of Davis’ 35-point performance came in the first 20 minutes.  The sophomore hit 14-of-24 from the field for the game and 6-of-7 from the free throw line.

Wright State went on a 11-2 run early in the second half to create some separation, taking a 50-43 lead.  After Green Bay got to within one, the Raiders had another 11-2 run to go up 61-51.

Green Bay returns to Horizon League action this coming weekend, returning to Ohio to face Youngstown State.

Ryan Era in Green Bay opens with a loss

The Will Ryan in Green Bay started with a 99-69 loss to the Minnesota Golden Gophers in Minneapolis on Wednesday night.

The Phoenix outscored the Gophers 47-46 in the second half and drew to within 10 points at 70-60 with just under eight minutes left to play before Minnesota went on a run to finish with a 30-point win.

Reigning Freshman of the Year (Horizon League) Amari Davis picked up where he left off last season, pouring in a team-high 17 points, hitting 7 of his 8 free throw attempts.

Three other Green Bay players finished in double figures.   Josh Jefferson had 14 points, PJ Pipes added 13 and Paris Taylor had 10 points to go along with seven rebounds.

Both teams struggled from distance with Green Bay hitting just 3 of 16 and Minnesota finishing 7 of 34.  Marcus Carr had 35 points and 7 rebounds, hitting 12 of 22 from the field for the Gophers.

Green Bay is off until Tuesday when they travel to Madison to face the Badgers at the Kohl Center.

Horizon League releases men’s preseason rankings

Two-time defending Horizon League men’s basketball champion Wright State has been picked to win the regular season title for a third straight year.  Youngstown State and Northern Kentucky were picked to finish second and third in the preseason poll as voted on by head coaches, SIDs and media members.

Horizon League members Green Bay and Milwaukee were picked to finish 8th and 10th respectively.

After earning Horizon League Freshman of the Year honors and shattering the single-season record for all-time freshman of the week awards (10), Green Bay guard Amari Davis has landed himself a spot on the preseason All-League First Team.  The true sophomore earned an all-league third team nod after averaging 15.9 ppg and 4.0 rpg last season.

Wright State’s Loudon Love was picked Preseason Player of the Year.  Love and Amari Davis were joined on the first team by Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis, IUPUI’s Marcus Burk and Youngstown State’s Darius Quisenberry.

Milwaukee’s Te’Jon Lucas was named to the Preseason All-Horizon League Second Team.
