The Marquette Golden Eagles had 9-days off between games.  But the well rested Golden Eagles struggled defensively and fell to No. 8 Xavier 89-70 on Wednesday night in Cincinnati.

Sophomore guard Markus Howard scored 33 points on 14-of-27 shooting, but no other Marquette player was able to hit double figures.  Senior guard Andrew Rowsey entered the game averaging 21 points a game but scored just six on 2-of-9 shooting.  Sophomore forward Sam Hauser suffered a hip injury late in the first half and played just three minutes in the second, finishing with five points.

The Musketeers (19-3, 7-2 Big East) shot 55.6% from the field and had five players score in double figures.  Xavier scored 51 points in the first half when they made 57.6% of their shots.

Meanwhile, Howard scored 24 of the teams 33 points in the first half, hitting 11 of 18 from the field for Marquette (13-7, 4-4).  But Howard had a streak of 66 straight made free throws dating back to last season, come to an end.  Steve Novak holds the program record at 68.

Now the Golden Eagles have to regroup for a matchup against top-ranked Villanova on Sunday at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

With a matchup against 11th ranked Xavier on the Horizon, the Marquette Golden Eagles avoided the trap game, rolling to a 70-52 win over the DePaul Blue Demons on Monday night at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

Rowsey finished with 11 points for Marquette (13-6, 4-3 Big East), as did Theo John, which was a career high for the freshman from Minneapolis.

Brandon Cyrus led DePaul (8-10, 1-5) with 15 points.

19th ranked Purdue had a big size advantage and they used it to knock off the Marquette Golden Eagles 86-71 in a Gavitt Tipoff game on Tuesday night at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

Purdue rotated 7’2 Isaac Haas and 7’3 Matt Haarms and combined for 29 points and eight rebounds as the Boilermakers improved to 3-0.  Haas had 22 points and five rebounds himself and the Golden Eagles didn’t have the size to effectively match up.

Marquette closed the first half on a 11-2 run to trail 32-30 at halftime.  But the Boilermakers fed the post to start the second half as Haas made four shots in the paint in the first 2 1/2 minutes of the second half to put Purdue up ten.

Marquette got to within 45-43 with 14:39 left to play, but wouldn’t get any closer.

Marquette hit 11 of 27 from three-point range, which kept them in the game.  Andrew Rowsey finished with 25 points and Markus Howard added 24 to lead the way for the Golden Eagles.

Purdue improved to 9-0 all-time against Marquette with the victory.  The Boilermakers are 3-0 on the season.  Marquette saw its early season record pull even at 1-1.
