If Tyler Cravy was nervous about his major league pitching debut, he certainly didn’t show it.  The Brewers rookie held the St. Louis Cardinals to a run on four hits while walking two and striking out six in seven innings, unfortunately he got no offensive support  in a 1-0 loss at Busch Stadium.

Cravy (0-1) was outdueled by Cardinal Lance Lynn, who held the Brewers scoreless for 7 2/3 innings.

Cravy entered the game with a 5-4 record and a 4.04 earned run average in nine starts at Class AAA Colorado Springs.  But he had wins in his last three starts.

The Cardinals got their run in the second when Randal Grichuk doubled and scored on former Brewer Mark Reynolds’ two out single.  It snapped a string of 19-scoreless innings by the Brewers pitching staff. [Read more…]

Bats go silent in Brewers loss

May 25, 2015 By Bill Scott

The Brewers return home to Miller Park today.

The Brewers return home to Miller Park today.

Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell gave Ryan Braun and Aramis Ramirez the day off on Sunday and the rest of the team struggled offensively in a 2-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves in the series finale.

Atlanta rookie right-hander Mike Foltynewicz held the Brewers to three-hits and a run in 7 2/3 innings.  Foltynewicz struck out seven Brewers.

The loss goes to Jimmy Nelson.  He went 5 2/3 innings, allowed five hits and two runs with five walks and four strikeouts.

The Braves took three of four in the series and the Brewers left Atlanta with a 4-6 record during their 10-game road trip.

Foltynewicz started the day with a 5.32 ERA.  Opponents were hitting .310 against him, but he turned things around against the Brewers.  Milwaukee didn’t get to him until the 7th when Elian Herrera gave the Brewers their only run with a sacrifice fly to center.

The Brewers return home today to open a series against the San Francisco Giants.

Everything seem to come together for the Milwaukee Brewers, who defeated the Tigers 8-1 last night to claim a second straight win and a series win.

Tied at one in the third inning, Ryan Braun, Adam Lind, and Aramis Ramirez combined to hit back-to-back-to-back home runs as part of a six-run frame.

The three consecutive home runs were the first ever by a visiting team at Comerica Park, and the first for the Brewers since August 27, 2012.

Overshadowed by the display of power was starter Jimmy Nelson’s dominating outing. He limited Detroit to one run on three hits over eight innings to improve to 2-4 on the season and help Milwaukee to its second road series win.  [Read more…]

No ill-effects for Gomez in Brewers rain-soaked win over Tigers

May 19, 2015 By Bill Scott

Carlos Gomez

Carlos Gomez

Carlos Gomez proved right from the very beginning Monday night that he was feeling fine after being hit in the head with a fastball just one day prior.

Gomez hit a lead off home run and drove in the game-winning run in the seventh as the Milwaukee Brewers earned a 3-2 win in rainy Detroit.

The centerfielder came to the plate with the game tied at two, runners on first and second with two outs, and laced a single to center off losing pitcher Kyle Lobstein. Gomez finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored.

Milwaukee (14-25) also got a boost from third baseman Aramis Ramirez, whose lead off home run in the fourth pulled the Brewers even before the game slowed down with heavy rains in the sixth inning. [Read more…]

There were five combined home runs, accounting for all six combined runs, between the Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds Tuesday night at Great American Ballpark. Unfortunately for the Brewers, they were on the short end of both categories.

The Reds three homers were enough to chase Kyle Lohse and Milwaukee (4-17) in a 4-2 defeat, their second straight.

Lohse served up a solo home run to Joey Votto in the first inning, then back-to-back jacks in the fourth inning to Brandon Phillips and Marlon Byrd to put the Brewers in a 4-0 hole. The loss is his fourth in five starts this season and third consecutive.

The Brewers bats were held in check to the tune of three hits, though two were solo home runs. Aramis Ramirez and Ryan Braun each hit their second homer of the season. [Read more…]

The Milwaukee Brewers gave regulars Ryan Braun, Aramis Ramirez and catcher Martin Maldonado the day off on Sunday, but the reserves came to the rescue, knocking off Lance Lynn and the St. Louis Cardinals 6-3 at Miller Park.

Lynn entered Sunday’s game with a 6-2 career mark and 2.23 ERA against the Brewers.  But the Brewers broke through against Lynn in the third.  Logan Schafer singled and scored on Gerardo Parra’s triple.  Adam Lind followed with a two-run homer to right-center and the Brewers led 3-0. [Read more…]

The Milwaukee Brewers picked up their third straight Cactus League win, 5-3 over the Colorado Rockies on Thursday.

Aramis Ramirez picked up his first extra-base hit of the spring, a two-run double in the first inning.

Wily Peralta earned one hit in three shutout innings.

First baseman Adam Lind, bothered by back issues to date, made his spring debut.  He was 0-for-2 with a walk. [Read more…]

Ramirez accepts $14 million option

November 3, 2014 By Bill Scott

Milwaukee Brewers third baseman Aramis Ramirez accepted the $14 million mutual option that the club had exercised on Friday, which means he’ll be back at third base for the Brewers next season.

Ramirez had just finished a three-year, $36 million free-agent deal that included a mutual option.  If the Brewers declined their half of the option, there would have been a $4 million buyout.  If Ramirez had declined the option, he would have become a free agent.

Ramirez hit .285 with 15 home runs and 66 RBI in over 133 games this past season.  He missed about a month of the season with a hamstring injury.

Ramirez turns 37 next June and is heading into his 18th Major League season.

Brewers exercise options on Gallardo and Ramirez

November 1, 2014 By Bill Scott

Yovani Gallardo - UPI/Bill Greenblatt

Yovani Gallardo – UPI/Bill Greenblatt

The Milwaukee Brewers have picked up the 2015-options on pitcher Yovani Gallardo and third-baseman Aramis Ramirez but declined to pick up the $11.5 million option on second baseman Rickie Weeks.

The Brewers have no viable option at third base besides Ramirez so they picked up their half of the $14 million mutual option.  Ramirez has three days to accept or decline.

Gallardo finished 8-11 in 2014 but had a career best 3.51 ERA over 32 starts.  He allowed 195 hits, issued 54 walks and struck out 146 hitters in 192 1/3 innings.  It’s his first losing record with the Brewers.

The 32-year-old Weeks was the second player selected in the 2003 draft but lost his everyday job at second base with the arrival of Scooter Gennett.  He played mostly against left-handed pitching this past season, hitting .274 with eight home runs and 29 rbi’s.  [Read more…]
