A late inning defensive miscue likely cost the Milwaukee Brewers a chance at victory in St. Louis last night, dealing the Brewers a major blow in their pursuit of a post season playoff spot.

Mark Reynolds committed the mental error at first base in the eighth inning.  With one out and a runner aboard, A.J. Pierzynski grounded to first base.  Reynolds fielded the ball cleanly, but instead of throwing to second to start a 3-6-3 double play, he simply turned and stepped on first base, thinking they had two outs already.

That error cost the Brewers a pair of runs and sent the game to extra innings.  Eventually, Tony Cruz provided the game winning rbi single in the 13th and sending the Brewers home with a 3-2 loss.

The Brewers dropped 6-games behind the Cardinals in the NL Central and 3 1/2 games behind the Pittsburgh Pirates in the NL Wildcard race. [Read more…]

Brewers pour it on Padres in series opener

The Milwaukee Brewers teed off on the San DiegoPadres last night, rolling to a 10-1 victory atPetco Park.

The Brewers banged out 16-hits, including home runs from Ryan Braun and Aramis Ramirez and Kyle Lohse (12-7) returned to the rotation, pitching six solid innings for his first victory since July 23.

Lohse missed his last start because of an ankle injury.  He returned to help the Brewers maintain their 1 1/2 game lead on the St. Louis Cardinals atop the NL Central.

Carlos Gomez, Ryan Braun and Aramis Ramirez all had three hits for the Brewers, while Ramirez and Gerardo Parra finished with three rbi’s.

The Brewers have now won five straight road games, the third time this season they’ve reached that total.

The Brewers and Padres play game two of the series tonight.  Jimmy Nelson (2-4, 4.15) goes for the Brewers.  San Diego sends Tyson Ross
(11-12, 2.68) to the mound.

Fiers leads Brewers to 5th straight win

Mike Fiers started slow, needing 44 pitches to get through the first two innings last night.  But thenFiers kicked in gear and allowed just one run on two hits, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 6-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays at Miller Park.

Fiers (3-1) retired the final 18 batters he faced.  He walked one and struck out six, lowering his ERA to 1.29.

The Brewers jumped on Toronto starter J.A. Happ (8-8) immediately, clubbing three doubles to take a 2-0 lead in the first.

The Brewers set a season high with seven doubles.  The team single game record is nine.  Jonathan Lucroy and Aramis Ramirez had two each.  Lucroy leads the Major Leagues with 42 and is trying to become the first catcher ever to lead the league in doubles.  The Brewers single season record is 53, held by Lyle Overbay back in 2004.

The Brewers had 42,221 fans show up for last night’s game, good for their 11th sellout of the season.

Brewers rebound to beat Dodgers with late rally

Things were looking grim for the Milwaukee Brewers, trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-0 heading to the 8th.  They they broke it open with five runs and went on to beat the Dodgers 6-3.

The Brewers started their rally against Dodgers reliever Jamey Wright, who pitched for the Brewers back in 2001.  Ryan Braun and Aramis Ramirez singled before Scooter Gennett added a runs coring single.  Khris Davis then tied the game with a double in right-center.  After an intentional walk to Mark Reynolds, Brandon League came in to strike out pinch-hitter Rickie Weeks.  With two outs and the bases loaded, Lyle Overbay emptied the bases with a three-run double to left.

Rookie Jimmy Nelson didn’t get the win, but he did give the Brewers a chance to win, holding the Dodgers to two runs over six innings.

Former Brewers pitcher Zach Greinke left after five shutout innings, holding the Brewers to just two hits.  But Greinke had to exit with a high pitch count and he remains winless against his former team.

Yasiel Puig had three hits and drove in two of the Dodgers runs in defeat.

The Brewers send Yovani Gallardo to the mound in game two of the  series tonight, against the Dodgers Clayton Kershaw.

The Brewers stayed two games in front of the Cardinals atop the NL Central.

 

Brewers get the best of Wainwright

Aramis Ramirez drove in runs with a home run and double and Jonathan Lucroy helped knock Wainwright out in the 6th with a bases loaded three run double to lead the Brewers offensively.

Wainwright entered the game with a  13-5 record and 1.92 ERA.  But he hasn’t been able to solve Ramirez though.  Aramis now has three home runs, eight doubles and eight rbi’s, to go along with a .415 batting average against Wainwright.

Wily Peralta won his 13th game of the season to tie Wainwright for the National League lead.  Peralta (13-6) allowed two runs and five hits in
6 2/3 innings to win his fourth straight start.  He’s given up two or fewer runs in all four, a stretch that started against the Cardinals back on July 13.  In three starts against the Cardinals this season, Peralta is 3-0 with a 1.35 ERA.

Zach Duke’s string of 16 consecutive scoreless outings ended when he walked two hitters and both scored on an extra base hit by Matt Carpenter.  That made the score 7-4, so Brewers manager Ron Roenicke went to Francisco Rodriguez to get the final out and record his 32nd save of the season.

The Brewers moved 3-games up on the Cardinals in the National League Central with the victory.  Pittsburgh is 2 1/2 games behind the Brewers.

Jonathan Lucroy had been mired in a slump, hitting .200 in his last 25 games.  Last night, Lucroy clubbed a pair of home runs, including the walk off game-winner as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-3 at Miller Park.

Ryan Braun and Aramis Ramirez both added home runs for the Brewers, who have taken the first two games of the series, handing the Reds their fifth straight defeat.

Lucroy’s game winner came in the 9th off of Sam LeCure to break a 3-3 tie.  He also homered in the sixth.

Rookie Jimmy Nelson worked 6-innings, allowing 3 runs on four hits but wasn’t involved in the decision.  The win went to Francisco Rodriguez (4-3), who pitched a scoreless top of the ninth to set the stage for Lucroy.

The Brewers entered the series having dropped 7 of 10 games against the Reds.  But they’ve won the first two games of the series and play for the sweep this afternoon.  Kyle Lohse (10-4, 3.16) faces Mike Leake (7-8, 3.63) in the pitching matchup.

The Reds have lost 5-straight games overall.

Three Brewer starters bring up the bottom of NL lineup card

game is played tonight at Target Field in Minneapolis.

Aramis Ramirez will bat sixth, catcher Jonathan Lucroy will hit eighth and center fielder Carlos Gomez will hit ninth for the National League.  Gomez will also be playing left field tonight.  Center field belongs to Pittsburgh’s Andrew McCutchen.

Former Brewer and current St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny announced his lineup yesterday.  He selected his own ace pitcher, Adam Wainwright, over Los Angeles Dodgers lefty Clayton Kershaw.  Kershaw is considered by many to be the best pitcher in all of baseball.

Wainwright enters the game tonight with a 12-4 record and a 1.83 ERA.  Kershaw is 11-2 with a 1.78 ERA.  Kershaw also has a no-hitter under his belt this season, plus 41 consecutive scoreless innings.

The fourth Milwaukee Brewer on the National League roster is closer Francisco Rodriguez.

are close to gaining starts in the upcoming MLB All-star game on July 15th at Target Field in Minneapolis.

Ramirez (1,790,777 votes) maintains his first place lead among National League third basemen, while outfielder Carlos Gomez (3,169,748) is second among National League outfielders.  The balloting closes this weekend and the squads will be announced on Sunday.

Other Brewers are in the mix as well.  First baseman Mark Reynolds, shortstop Jean Segura and catcher Jonathan Lucroy are both second at their positions, while Ryan Braun is 5th among outfielders.

The Brewers have had at least one Brewers player elected to start in five of the last seven All-Star Games since 2007.

Brewers are 4 for 4 against Colorado

Rickie Weeks had three hits, including a leadoff home run, Aramis Ramirez clubbed a 2-run shot and Scooter Gennett added a pinch hit two-run home run as the Milwaukee Brewers knocked off the Colorado Rockies 7-4.  The Brewers swept the Rockies in Denver this week and added their 4th straight win against Colorado last night.

Wily Peralta (9-5) allowed three straight singles in the fourth before Ryan Wheeler hit a grand slam that gave the Rockies a 4-3 lead.  But Peralta settled down and the Brewers re-took the lead in the fifth.  Rickie Weeks doubled and scored on Jonathan Lucroy’s single.  A sacrifice fly by Khris Davis put the Brewers ahead 5-4.  Scooter Gennett’s home run in the 8th gave the Brewers the final margin of victory.

Peralta won his fifth consecutive start for the Brewers.  He gave up four runs and eight hits in six innings.  He struck out seven and walked two in his second win over the Rockies in less than a week.

Francisco Rodriguez earned his major league-leading 26th save and the 330th of his career, tying him with John Wetteland for 12th on the all-time list.

Kyle Lohse (9-2, 3.20) pitches game two of the series tonight against the Rockies Tyler Matzek (1-2, 5.19).

Brewers rule the road

The Milwaukee Brewers continued their road dominance with a 6-5 win over the Colorado Rockies in Denver on Sunday.  The Brewers wrapped

up a 6-1 road trip by sweeping the Rockies, improving to 27-15 away from Miller Park this season.  That is the best road mark in the majors.

On Saturday, the Brewers scored three runs on a wild pitch.  Yesterday, Colorado’s Corey Dickerson tripled and tried to score on a throw that got away.  But Dickerson tripped and fell on his way to the plate and was thrown out, allowing the Brewers to hang on for the win.

The sweep of the Rockies is just the second over Colorado in Denver.  The first came back in 2004.

The Brewers improved to a season best 17-games over .500 at 47-30, that’s the best mark in the National League, and only a half-game behind the Oakland A’s for the best overall record in baseball.

Kyle Lohse worked only 5-innings, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits.  But Lohse still earned the win and improved to 9-2 on the season.  Lohse walked three and struck out three.

Aramis Ramirez and Lyle Overbay (pinch hit) both homered for the Brewers in the victory.

The Brewers are back home to host the Washington Nationals at Miller Park tonight.  Matt Garza (4-4, 4.02) pitches for the Brewers.  Gio Gonzalez (3-4, 4.85) goes for the Nationals.
